Community

Building for the future is what we do every day, and our involvement with the communities that surround our projects and offices is a critical component of our work. Delivering quality and value to our customers has always been Bechtel’s priority. But our commitment also extends to improving the standard of living and quality of life of the communities where we do business. In office and project communities, we work with employees and customers to improve the civic, economic, educational, and social environment. Additionally, in 1954, the Bechtel Group Foundation was created to respond to the needs of the communities around the world in which Bechtel has offices or major projects. One of its purposes is to provide grants to children and universities all over the world.

Ethics

Our reputation for adhering to the highest standards of business ethics is one of our most valuable assets. We stand by everything we do. Bechtel does not tolerate behavior that is unfair or unethical, and all employees are required to comply with these standards and with applicable local, state, federal, and in-country laws. Bechtel has a long-standing policy of zero tolerance for bribery. Bechtel also promotes global standards of ethical business conduct through our involvement with leading organizations. We are proud to be:

  • A signatory to the Business Principles for Countering Bribery, an initiative of the World Economic Forum in partnership with Transparency International and the Basel Institute on Governance
  • A member of the World Economic Forum's Partnering Against Corruption Initiative
  • A corporate contributor to Transparency International-USA, a nonprofit organization dedicated to strengthening integrity and combating corruption in the United States and elsewhere

Our Goal: Zero Accidents  

Safety is a value that is fundamental to our culture. Bechtel has earned an industry-leading record of achieving zero lost-time incidents on projects worldwide. Year after year, our zero accidents philosophy helps put our safety performance right at the top of the industry.
 
We believe that every accident, and therefore every injury, is preventable, and we embed that philosophy into every Bechtel project through a combination of technical field procedures and ongoing training programs. Every employee has stop-work authority—if it's not safe, don't do it. We also ask our subcontractors and partners to adopt our commitment to safety and health. The result is exceptional safety performance, even in hazardous work environments, severe weather, and remote locations.

Our dedication to safety helps keep workers safe, and it also pays off for our customers. Their operating costs go down and productivity goes up because less time is lost to accidents. And our people go home to their families safely at the end of each day.

Sustainability 

Our success around the globe is inextricably linked to society’s progress. Increasingly, our customers and projects face some of the toughest sustainability challenges such as rising urbanization, water security, access to reliable energy, extreme weather, and global workforce development. We regard sustainability as our responsibility to enhance the positive effects of our projects where possible and avoid or mitigate the potentially negative ones. We believe that we are not just delivering a physical asset to our customers and communities but also creating an enabling environment that will benefit them in the long term. We are fortunate that the scale and mix of our projects enables us to make significant positive impacts in the communities where we work.
